We anonymously surveyed psychologists, therapists and other self-care experts on their top unique self-care ideas for singles on Valentine’s Day, and here’s what we found.
When searching for self-care ideas many usual suspects come up: meditation, journaling, exercise, spa days…shall I go on? These are all great options for self-care and you should definitely incorporate them into your daily or weekly routine.
However, maybe you want to add other methods of caring for yourself that you don’t typically hear about. Maybe other, newer methods will work better for you.
One of my favorite days in 2019 was Valentine’s Days spent with my coworkers.
I woke up, listened to the Breakfast Club morning show on Power 105.1. The radio personalities always crack me up in the morning and delivered that 10 fold on February 14th.
At work, my colleagues and I traded candy and cute cards celebrating the holiday. We went to lunch together and sat outside to enjoy the sun (I live in Miami). Having a tribe that is supportive and fun makes your day so much better!
After work, we went to yoga class together (our job paid for it!) and it was amazing and sooo relaxing. I had the best day ever on V-Day, even while single.
Since self-care is a recipe that you create for yourself, you should always be open to try new tips and figure out what works for you!
Taking care of your mental health is especially important this time of year for single people. Who would have thought we’d still be in the thick of the pandemic in 2021?
With that in mind, check out these four unique self-care ideas for singles on Valentine’s Day, or any other day for that matter!:
Make A List of Your Single Friends
One thing that makes being single more challenging than it needs to be is only surrounding yourself with people who are in relationships. You should always have both single friends and friends that are taken.
Everything doesn’t have to be a couples activity and you don’t always have to be the fifth wheel.
Find friends who are in similar places as you in their love lives so you can enjoy certain activities with them.
You can plan a platonic love filled Galentine’s Day, picnic, a day on the beach and much more!
Tik Tok has a super cute trend where a group of best friends go on a picnic date and share snacks and take photos. Many bring flowers and charcuterie boards for the aesthetic. You can also share a cake and cut it easily by digging your wine glasses into the dessert and eating out of the cup. It’s less messy and easy to do!
Make a list of all the single people you know and figure out who you would like to build a relationship with. This can include your cousins, coworkers, friends or classmates.
You can also meet new people with similar interests on apps like Bumble BFF and Meetup.
I joined a book club on Meetup in the past!
Get A Reading
Get a tarot card or astrological chart reading by an expert.
A tarot card reading can help you gain more insight about your professional and personal life.
You can ask questions about your family, career, friendships, future and love life! Some questions you can ask your reader are:
1. What needs to happen so I can grow in my career?
2. What do I need to know about my loved ones?
3. What energy is surrounding me right now?
An astrological chart reading is another great choice to learn more about your elements, your inner self, your outer self, your intellect, your emotions and how you love.
It is much more detailed and thorough than reading your daily horoscope.
Getting a reading is also a great way to support small businesses!
Virtual Cooking class
Since social distancing is still a reality for a majority of Americans, attending a virtual cooking class is the perfectly safe activity that will help you build on your skills.
An online course expands the kinds of cuisines you can learn to make because you can live on the west coast and take a cooking class based in New York City.
On Masterclass.com, you can learn from my favorite sassy chef, Gordon Ramsay.
You can also learn to cook savory sushi and sake from Japan or roll pasta with an Italian grandma with Airbnb Experiences.
There are so many options out there to try!
Volunteer
Acts of kindness are proven to make not only those in need feel better, but they also improve the mood of the person who is extending a helping hand.
This year, take some time to volunteer in your community. More people are at need than ever before!
A great site to find opportunities is Volunteer Match. There, you can find a wide range of nonprofits in your community that need help. Some cool ways to provide assistance include:
- Exotic Plant Removal
- Beach Clean Ups
- Animal Shelters
- Hospice Care
- Social Justice Campaigns
- Poverty Alleviation Services
- COVID-19 Contact Tracing
